Schoolfind

About this site

Schoolfind is an independent directory of England's state-funded and grammar schools. Official data about schools already exists, published by government, but it's scattered across separate tools and 150+ different council websites. This site pulls the official data into one searchable place.

What this site is not

This is not an official application system. In England, admissions to state-funded schools are decided by the school's admissions authority - either the local council, or the school/trust itself for voluntary aided schools, foundation schools, academies and free schools. Every school page links to the right place to actually apply.

Known limitations

  • Scope:England only, and only state-funded and grammar schools - independent/private schools aren't included.
  • Catchment areas:there's no national dataset of catchment area boundaries. This site shows each school's location on a map, but not a catchment boundary or "last distance offered" figure - check with the admissions authority linked on each school's page for that.
  • Ofsted ratings: Ofsted moved to a new inspection framework in 2024 which no longer gives a single headline rating for schools inspected under it. A small share of schools (recently reinspected) may show as unrated here even though Ofsted has published a newer, more detailed report - the link to the full report always has the latest detail.
  • Admissions authority:whether a school or its local council decides admissions is inferred from the school's official establishment type, which is usually but not always a reliable indicator. Always confirm with the linked authority.
  • Council admissions links:every council on this site links straight to its real admissions page rather than a generic search. These links were individually verified against each council's own website but council sites are restructured from time to time, so please flag it if one goes stale.
